Outdoor Adventure Awaits

No matter what time of year you’re visiting, Wyoming County offers outdoor adventures that put the “explore” in Explore Letchworth and Beyond! In this delightful ruralscape tucked away from the hustle and bustle, wide-open skies, scenic trails, and peaceful landscapes create a natural playground for outdoor enthusiasts. This itinerary will guide you through a revitalizing escape, where you’re surrounded by the beauty of nature and adventure welcomes you at every turn.

Day One

Upon arriving in Wyoming County, your belly might be craving a meal to fuel your adventure. Head over to Caroline’s at the Glen Iris Inn and request their picnic lunch—you can take some of their delicious food selections with you as part of your first outdoor experience: a visit to Letchworth State Park! Luckily, you’ll be just around the corner from the Park, so once you’ve picked up your food, find the perfect spot to enjoy your meal and take in your first views of the stunning natural beauty that surrounds you.

Additionally, you’ll find many snack and food options throughout the Park if you’re visiting between May and October, so you won’t be hard-pressed to find just what you’re craving! Check out our visitor’s guide for details.

Once you’ve had a chance to nourish yourself and soak in the views, it’s time to explore the “Grand Canyon of the East” – Letchworth State Park! Let your curiosity lead the way as you walk the park’s trails and paths, stopping at scenic overlooks to admire the waterfalls and gorges. There are over 66 miles of trails – varying in length from ¼ mile up to 24 miles. Try hiking, biking, horseback riding, skiing, snowmobiling and more. The trails varying in difficulty from easy to hard (almost all are easy or moderate – only the Finger Lakes Trail is hard at 24 miles.  (And if you’re visiting in winter, when things may be a little quieter – besides the crunch of snow beneath your feet – you might even catch a glimpse of our famous frozen volcano!)

While in the park, be sure to explore the Autism Nature Trail, a specially designed trail with sensory-friendly experiences that encourage creativity and connection in a safe, natural setting. You’re also invited to visit the Humphrey Nature Center to learn more about the plants, animals and geology of the area. Don’t miss the butterfly garden and bird observation station while you’re there!

After an exciting start to your Wyoming County adventure, it’s time to decide where you’ll lay your head. Camp out in a campground to continue connecting with nature, allowing the nighttime sounds to soothe you to sleep; tuck yourself into a cozy cabin or stay in a rental property for a more local experience; or check into a convenient hotel. Treat yourself to a casual dinner at Charcoal Corral & Silver Lake Twin Drive-In, a Wyoming County staple. Choose from handhelds like burgers, hot dogs, subs and sandwiches, lighter bites such as soups and salads, or hearty meals like their broasted chicken dinners and the crowd-favorite dumpster plate. You’re also in for a treat if you visit on a Wednesday for Italian night or on a Friday for their seafood dinners! Don’t forget to check what’s playing next door at the Silver Lake Twin Drive-In, where you can catch a movie under the stars.

If you’re up for one more “nightcap” of outdoor adventure, consider an evening of stargazing at Perry Public Beach, along the Silver Lake Trail, or back at Letchworth State Park – just be sure to check location hours before you go.

Day Two

Rise and shine! Day two starts with a light meal at 49 Coffee House & Eatery, where you’ll find savory breakfast bowls, toasts, breakfast sandwiches and burritos, waffles and more – all perfectly paired with your choice of coffee, lattes, teas and more, hot or iced. (Note: There are multiple locations, so be sure to navigate to the eatery in Arcade, NY.)

Ready to head back outdoors? No matter the season, Wyoming County offers plenty of exciting ways to get your adrenaline going and your heart pumping. Here are some great options to choose from – and don’t hesitate to fill your morning or afternoon with more than one adventure!

Spring and Summer

·       It’s a great time to get on the water! Go river rafting with Adventure Calls Outfitters, kayaking or canoeing through the glistening scenic waterways of Wyoming County. Wyoming County.

·       Find a peaceful spot on the water and take a relaxing fishing excursion – whether you’re experienced or going for your first catch.

·       Take a dip at Perry Public Beach, or just lounge lakeside to bask in the sunlight or enjoy the friendly atmosphere.


Fall

·       Step onto the greens and play a few rounds of golf – and if you’re golfing at The Club at Silver Lake, you can enjoy a meal or beverage after your final tee.

·       Visit the Beaver Meadow Nature Preserve for an immersive experience exploring its wildlife, flora and fauna, and trails.

·       Hike through the Carlton Hill Multiple Use Area, where you can admire the foliage and observe wildlife in their natural habitats.

Winter

·       Crank up the adventure with a thrilling snowmobile ride, ski and/or snowshoeing excursion at Byrncliff Golf Resort & Banquets or within Letchworth State Park!

You’ve likely worked up an appetite, and Silverlake Family Restaurant is ready to satisfy that hunger! You’re sure to find what your tastebuds crave with options like wings, quesadillas, soup and chili, wraps and paninis, and more.

Give yourself some downtime to relax and freshen up at your lodging before wrapping up your second day of outdoor exploration.

 Wyoming County’s craft brewery scene at Farmcraft Brewery, where you can sip a refreshingly hoppy beer (or cocktail or wine), while enjoying an evening meal of bar favorites like pizza, sandwiches, mac and cheese, and more.

Or, if you’d prefer to keep dinner more lowkey, choose to dine at your lodging’s dining establishment (if available), or stop into a nearby eatery to place a to-go order and bring it back to your domicile.

Day Three

Awaken feeling rested and refreshed, and make sure you have all of your belongings before checking out of your accommodations. Though this is your last day exploring Letchworth and beyond, don’t fret – more adventure awaits!

Cap off your Wyoming County experience with an unforgettable adventure by taking an early morning ride with Balloons Over Letchworth. (Be sure to check launch times, as they vary from season to season.) Treat yourself to a beautiful sunrise in the quiet morning atmosphere, as you drift over Letchworth State Park’s gorges and among the trees. Prefer to watch instead of ride? No problem – just pick the perfect spot, settle in and let your eyes follow the colorful balloons that float by!

If you need some fuel to get yourself right-side up, make your way to Vertical Café, where they proudly offer a “small town experience with big city appeal!”  Whether you’re going for a hot or iced beverage, biting into a crispy breakfast panini or bagel, or spooning up the bright flavors of an acai bowl, you’ll find just what you need to boost your energy. Or, visit Studio Café for fresh baked goods, breakfast sandwiches and incredible Chai Lattes.

Next, how about a scenic drive? Take your time and absorb all the natural beauty that Wyoming County offers, capturing the experience in your mind as a snapshot of a special travel memory. Gaze out at the vast space of rolling hills, stop at roadside stands or local farms that may be open, and pull over if you find a peaceful spot to take in refreshing breaths of air. When they say sometimes the journey is the destination, this is what it means.

Before heading home, indulge in exciting, international flavors at the Indian Bistro, Fiesta Bamba Mexican Restaurant, or Taqueria Rio Grande. Settle in and relax for your meal or take it to-go.
