Birding is a fun activity that everyone can enjoy!

Western New York is home to a vast array of amazing habitat that supports hundreds of different bird species. Birding, or birdwatching, is one of the fastest growing outdoor recreational activities that can be enjoyed by all ages and experiences. Plus it's a great way to get outdoors!

 

Ready to embark on your own birding adventure? Here are two nearby locations where you can experience the best of Wyoming County’s avian life.

Beaver Meadow Audubon

Located within a 324-acre nature preserve, Beaver Meadow Audubon features ponds, glacial kettle ponds, wetlands and wooded uplands. With more than eight miles of maintained trails, visitors can explore diverse ecosystems that attract more than 200 species throughout the year. Birding enthusiasts may catch sight of the striking blue-winged warbler or even the majestic bald eagle soaring overhead.

Amenities: Accessible boardwalk, restrooms, interpretive signage, and on-site staff (Tues-Sat, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.). No hunting is permitted.

Carlton Hill Multiple Use Area

For those looking to explore a wilder birding destination, Carlton Hill Multiple Use Area spans 2,500 acres of former farmland and scattered woodlots. This expansive conservation area supports a variety of bird species, including raptors, warblers and blackbirds. Designated as a Bird Conservation Area in 2006, Carlton Hill provides excellent opportunities for spotting songbirds and woodpeckers in their natural habitats

Amenities: Multiple trails, designated parking areas, and leashed pets welcome. Hunting is allowed between Sept. 1 – May 31.

Letchworth State Park – Osprey Nesting Sites

Two breeding pairs of osprey can be found near Letchworth State Park, offering a special birding experience for visitors. One nesting site is located east of Route 39 between Perry and Castile, while the other can be viewed along West Lake Road near the hamlet of Oatka. These locations provide a unique chance to observe these striking raptors in their natural habitat.

Amenities: Designated parking areas and multiple scenic overlooks. Some trails and viewpoints may require moderate walking.

Silver Lake State Park

A favorite among birdwatchers and nature lovers, Silver Lake State Park offers peaceful lakeside views and prime opportunities for spotting majestic eagles, particularly at the south end of the lake. It’s a rewarding stop for wildlife observation!

Amenities: Fishing piers, picnic areas, boat launch and restrooms available.
