4 South Main Street
Perry, NY
Join musician and historian Dave Ruch at Act 4 Books for The War of 1812: Stories & Songs from New York & Beyond, a fascinating presentation exploring the War of 1812 through the songs, stories and experiences of the people who lived through this important chapter in American history.
Ruch dug deeply into archives, diaries, old newspapers and historical manuscripts to uncover rarely heard music from the era. Combining these songs with stories and humor, his presentation offers an engaging portrait of what is sometimes called the “second war of independence.”
The program also has a special connection to the local community. Following the War of 1812, the village of Perry—like many communities across the country—changed its name in honor of war hero Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. Come learn more about the conflict and discover why the War of 1812 had such a lasting impact on the young United States and communities like Perry.
This free event is the second in a series of America 250 programs presented by Act 4 Books. The series invites participants to explore what it means to be an American while recognizing the important role local communities play in our nation's story.
